Everyone wants creative book centerpieces that stand out no matter the event. They help add a special touch to the decor and are perfect for book enthusiasts.

Stack the books together and decorate however you’d like. No matter if you’re celebrating a wedding, baby shower, or dinner party, book centerpieces are sure to catch your guests’ eyes despite being super easy to make! The best part, if you ask me, is the fact that you don’t need a lot of things to make these babies. Just some old books, candles, creativity, and this blog!

We have curated 21 ideas to make book centerpieces that are sure to wow your guests. AND some extra tidbits of advice that are sure to make this way easier.

How To Choose A Book Centerpiece That Matches Your Event Style

The quickest way to choose a book centerpiece? Filter your options by occasion, table shape, and guest experience. Not size or color first- planning first (sorry I had to).

Consider your setting

Weddings / formal dinners: Go for neutral colored/muted book covers. Neat stacks and uniform sized books work really well and give that intentional look. Flowers and candles are literally the cherry on top that literally brings the whole look together.

Casual parties / showers: This is where your creative genius shines. Mixed books with bold colours, asymmetrical stacks and messily arranged fairy lights can give off chaotic sophistication (personally, chef’s kiss).

Home decor/books as decor: Your absolute FAVOURITE books are going to use here. I mean, it’s something you will see daily, so it better be something you love. I would go with the Percy Jackson books, because it is my comfort read.

Figure out seating arrangement

Wedding dinners /seated event meals: The book stacks should be short and neat to keep the look formal.

Coworking events /cocktail tables /events with mingling: Strategically messy and taller stacks work way better here.

Finally, count your tables

Solo table design? You can get as detailed as you want with your book centerpiece.

Multiple tables? Please go for something easy (we don’t want muscle cramps and bags under eyes)

If all three of these things work with your choice, rejoice! The fates are with you and you are on the right track.

Creative Book Centerpiece Ideas

Books & Florals

You know those vintage book centerpieces that high-key give off old-school romantic vibes? Yeah, well they are easier to make than you’d think!

Start with some hardcover books and shake ’em up a bit. Then, simply add a small vase (preferably golden or a neutral colour) which fits a flower or two at max. Add in light pink roses, baby breaths, or daisies and bam! You got yourself a centerpiece with almost no effort and gets a high number of compliments.

Here’s the trick that really makes it work. Put those silver-ish tea light candles (mercury glass they’re called) all around everything. When you light them the shadows look really romantic and dreamy across the books.

Your guests are going to walk in and be pretty impressed by the whole vintage-lost-library-from-centuries-ago vibe. You can even add creative DIY photo crafts to the table for a unique touch that complements the vintage theme.

Gothic-coded Centerpiece

Want a dark, gothic center piece? I gotchu.

First find an old book with themes like death, isolation, human flaws, you get the point (Frankenstein’s your BEST friend here). The worse shape it’s in, the better. To all the readers who hate destroying books, I get you, because same. So, use copies! The same effect, less guilt. Rip out several pages from the book and tear them up. Place them around haphazardly. It looks better uneven.

Next, place dark candlesticks in colours like black, deep crimson or burgundy. Trust me, this alone can sometimes elevate your decor to a whole new level.

Finally, add copper or silver confetti to the top of everything along with fake blood or deep red paint splatters. Once lit, it will reflect the light and create literally a masterpiece that would go crazy beside a gothic wedding cake!

Book Table Number

Purchase a golden frame and print off one page that reads “Chapter” followed by your table number. (i.e. Chapter 15 for table 15.) Once printed, pick up some green moss from your local craft store and place around your frame in a way that makes it look intentionally chaotic.

Next, add a small forest themed embellishment or a few of those silver holographic butterfly cutouts. Top with some small flowers like baby blue breaths. And to elevate this, get some golden wire and weave it through the moss along with the flowers.

Honestly, this is perfect for giving that whimsical, cottage-core vibe in a fairytale themed wedding.

Literary Lovers

If fellow book lovers are your guests, I have the perfect idea for you!

Here’s what you are gonna do. Grab some classic romance books, like ‘Pride and Prejudice’ or ‘Jane Eyre’ (If you manage to get your hands on one off those special edition hardbacks, even better!) and stack them neatly on the table.

Then take some vintage pearl necklaces from the thrift store and drape them on the books to make them look all fancy. Own some small fancy glass vases? Put them near the books and throw in some dainty and beautiful flowers in them.

Even if you don’t have the vases, you can put in some fresh roses, peonies, or hydrangeas in bright colors right between the books. It looks super elegant and really pretty.

Books & Lantern

Dreamy and magical book centerpieces are easier to make than you would think.

Start by stacking some old books that can be found in attics or thrift stores. The more worn out they look, the better. This whole look is based off vintage vibes.

Then grab a white (or any neutral shade that goes with the event’s colour pallet) lantern and stuff it with some pretty flowers like roses or daisies and some greenery from your backyard or the nearest florist.

And now we get down to the really cool stuff. Get some old keys and place them around the books (antique ones look awesome but any old keys work). Put a candle on an antique candle holder or a glass tealight around the books and believe me, in dim light, with shadows from the candle, it will look like it’s literally out of a book.

Book Page Planter

Got folded book pages? We are going to upcycle them into book page planters!

Get a wide pot (If you got a colour pallet, use a colour from that and if not, choose an off white one). Then, take some plants (a simple bouquet of roses or lavenders can work really well here), wrap them with the folded pages and tie it with a brown jute rope.

Cluster some brass candlesticks around it, in varying heights to create a cozy yet elegant ambiance. Vintage paper, fresh flowers, and candles are literally a GOATED combo. Whether you’re entertaining a small group for dinner or hosting a book club meeting, your guests will swoon.

And those books will certainly be put to better use than collecting dust on a random shelf. You get to upcycle them AND impress your guests, A win-win in my opinion!

Books & Hydrangeas

If you love hydrangea-based centerpieces, this one is for you.

No matter the event, a stack of old books can boost the decorations like nothing else can. Get yourself some worn out books (the nearest thrift store is your friend here) and stack them however you’d like. Add a bouquet of fresh hydrangeas, preferably blue, and guess what? You are halfway there!

Now, the fun part! Open a book and either write or print the table number on it. This gives off such elegant and artsy vibes that your guests are going to be wowed. The fresh and fluffy hydrangeas truly tie the look together.

This is such an inexpensive look if you thrift the books and looks way more expensive than it actually is. Fair warning though, please don’t stack the books so high it topples over. We are NOT going to let some extra books ruin the event lol.

Book with Fairy Lights

Making a magical book centerpiece is way cooler than just stacking books on a table. You’re gonna want to start by threading some fairy lights through the pages- they look super pretty when they glow against the words.

Next, stick some small flowers in between the pages wherever you think looks good. The pops of color really makes it stand out. Then throw in a few of those decorative rattan balls for some extra texture, you know?

The whole thing turns a regular book into something people will actually want to talk about. It’s perfect for when you’re having people over at night, the lights just make everything feel cozy and special. Plus it’s really not that hard to put together, which is nice. You could even incorporate stained glass mason jars as additional decor elements to enhance the magical ambiance.

Stamped Books

If twinkle lights aren’t really your style, consider stacking books with imprinted words on them instead. It’s a cinch and oh-so chic.

Simply pull out three old hardcover books and prop them up so the words (i.e. HAPPY, LIVE, LOVE) are showing for all to see. Then add blush pink silk peonies and dried eucalyptus around the books, allowing some of the stems to drape down the sides.

You get that boho look with a sprinkle of inspiration quotes that we all know everyone is obsessed with right now. AND it’s a quite a lot easier than wrestling with lights and cords that take way too long to detangle.

Childhood Favourite

Grab some old hardcover books and stack them around the Beatrix Potter book. Then add some succulents and pretty flowers to fill in the gaps. You are gonna want a small candle too but make sure its unscented so it’s doesn’t overshadow everything else.

The soft colors+ different textures= nostalgia. It’s like your guests are stepping back into their childhood or something.

Super easy to put together and it looks way fancier than it actually is.

Books Tablescapes

If you want to learn how to create a sweet fairy tale center piece, then follow these directions.

Open a hard cover book and balance it on top of a small wooden box. Glue a small door on one of the pages and add some small stairs coming from the opposite page crawling up to the door.

Then cover the bottom of the book with moss to give it that enchanted forest look. Place some small benches, post lamps and voila! (Bonus tip- Add in some small fairy statues for that cottagecore aesthetic.)

There you go! You now have a really pretty centerpiece that is whimsical and pragmatic all at once. Your guests will be queuing up for selfies for this centerpiece that is way easier to make than it looks!

Tim Burton-Inspired Centerpiece

If you’re trying to create a table with that creepy Burton-esque theme, I recommend making a book centerpiece.

Stack old vintage books (I mean duh) and gather some black and silver frames to display gothic silhouette cut outs. You can also print your favorite quotes from Tim on antique-looking paper. And if you can’t find some, spill coffee on some fresh pages and crumple them slightly to make them look worn out.

Throw in some black dahlias and burgundy roses to darken it up! Don’t forget the candles because it just wouldn’t be the same without that romantic, mysterious feel. And there you have it, a perfect centerpiece for a Corpse Bride themed wedding!

Library-themed centerpiece

It is inexpensive and simple to create.

Select a vintage book (you don’t need it to be vintage either! Just find a book with a cover you like), open to a page that symbolizes something to you. Simply place a pair of reading glasses atop the book, add in a feather pen for decoration and set a small lamp nearby. (I prefer ones that are amber in color.)

BONUS: Find a wooden card file drawer and display place cards or small gifts for each guest inside of it. They will be so impressed with your amazing crafting skills and it required no skills whatsoever. Insert wink emoji here You can pick these up at your local thrift store for a few bucks as well.

Setting this up should only take you 15 minutes or less and screams those cute “library feel” vibes we are all about these days.

Book Page Table Runner

Easy back book page runner! Follow these steps:

Carefully rip or fold some book pages and crumple them down the center of your table runner. Don’t worry about making it neat. Crumpled looks great.

Then place hardcover books randomly wherever they look best. Wedge flowers or greenery in between the books.

You can also use random knick-knacks you have around the house. Keys, vintage pocket watches, small picture frames. Everything actually works perfectly for this (especially if it’s antique).

It doesn’t take long at all and your friends will think you splurged at Pottery Barn. Give it a try!

Graduation Themed Centerpiece

Hey! Want to know how to make a super cute grad decoration? Read below.

Find some books from their major (biology? find some science books) and stack them nicely. Then take a ribbon of your school colors and tie the books together. This looks SO much better than you expect with almost zero effort!

Next, roll up a diploma and place it beside the books however you’d like. You don’t have to use the real diploma; you can easily make one yourself. And for a personal touch, write heartfelt message inside the ‘diploma’. Find a simple vase/jar and fill it with bright blossoms that match with your school colours. Again, something simple, we aren’t trying to win any awards here (you already graduated lol).

Find some pictures of you and your friends doing things through the years and get them framed. Only the good memories! Also, add some apples because come on… school and apples go hand in hand. Its practically a tradition.

Lastly, lay the whole thing on some fabric that matches your school colours. It really brings everything together and nobody will know how easy it was: ). This takes no time at all, and people will think you are the most creative person!

Books with Moss & Succulents

All you have to do is buy a couple used hardcover books from the thrift store or use the old ones lying around your house. Stack those babies and dump some moss on top and place a tiny succulent.

Seriously, that’s it. You’re taking books and smashing them together with nature. I know that sounds questionable but it’s literally chef’s kiss! And if you want to add in another element to spice it up a bit, just add a tealight candle.

Best of all? It only takes a few ingredients to make this beauty. It doesn’t even require a lot of maintenance– the succulent hardly needs watering. You can keep this DIY centerpiece out year-round too in any room you desire. Living room, bedroom, doesn’t matter. It works everywhere.

Classic Literature Centerpieces

Just pile up some old classic novels and tie ribbon and lace around them. Yeah, that’s it.

Place a darling label on top with quotes from the book titles “To Kill a Mockingbird”, “The Great Gatsby”, or whatever else strikes your fancy. Stick a flower made out of paper the books or nearby. You can even use dried flowers to add an extra touch.

Perfect for weddings, bridal showers, or even your next dinner party. This is way better than getting expensive decor that will burn a hole in your wallet. It looks way fancier than it actually is and compliments will pour in like crazy.

Best of all, even if you can’t be crafty to save your life, you can pull this off SO well. You literally just need to stack books and tie. Easy, right?

Black and Gold Accents

You want your book centerpiece to look really nice? Okay cool. First take three to five old leather books (the ones with the aesthetic covers) and stack them. Bonus points if they are black! After that place your gold candles on top at varying heights. (It looks so much better that way.)

Now for the fun part. Find an antique frame and place your favorite book quote inside, something that gives elegant. Next, place a small mason jar and fill with lavender sprigs to soften it up. Gold foliage/candles look so classy, especially if you’re entertaining at night.

But seriously though, I love how the gold flickers in the light. It’s a great way to impress your friends when you don’t want to spend money on decor.

The Tree of Books

Want to make a cool centerpiece that looks like a magical book tree? It’s actually pretty easy!

Start by taking some old book pages and folding them into fan shapes to make the trunk part. Then you can make branches out of more pages that stick out and reach up toward the ceiling. The part that pulls the whole look together is when you weave the LED lights through the paper branches and leaves. The dreamy glow that it casts is to die for.

Your basically turning regular books into this whole fantasy forest thing. Everyone whose comes to your party is gonna be so impressed. The paper tree makes the whole room feel like you’re inside a J.R.R. Tolkien book. Plus, it looks way more expensive than it actually is to make, which is always a win.

Hand-written Spines

Okay, so after that magical book tree, let’s talk about another centerpiece that’s super meaningful.

Grab some old hardcover books from a thrift store or your attic. Then use chalk markers to write your favorite quotes or bible verses right on the spines. I know that sounds high-key weird but trust me, it’s SO worth it.

Stack them up in different heights so it looks elegantly messy. Then tie some satin ribbon around the whole stack to hold it together.

The best part is your guests will actually read the quotes, and it gives them something to talk about. Plus, it shows what’s important to you without being all preachy about it. Way better than just some random decoration that doesn’t mean anything.

Book Page Centerpieces

Take pages from old books and roll them into tight scrolls. Stack these scrolls underneath a glass cloche (that’s a glass dome).

Balance a wooden artist’s mannequin on top- the type that have movable joints. Pose as if it’s reading a book (if you can glue a small book to its hands, it can really add to the whole look).

The dome will keep your display dust-free as well as giving it that artsy museum vibe. It’s also book-themed for that DIY party you’re going to. Your guests will be amazed you went through so much effort!

Book Centerpiece Size Depends on…TABLE SIZE.

Yep. The table you’re decorating often dictates whether someone will love or hate your centerpiece. We are going for centerpieces that are pretty AND practical.

Normal dining tables

  • Maximum height: 8”
  • Ideal stack size: 2–4 books
  • Ideal stack shape: bigger bottom, smaller top

Round tables

  • Avoid center stacks that are tall
  • Keep stacks low + in the center OR use multiple small stacks around the table (Not both please, it will be too overwhelming)

Long banquet tables

  • Use the same small book stack every 2–3 feet.
  • People don’t expect 1 large centerpiece on long tables. It stands out… not always in a good way.

Cocktail tables

  • Centerpieces can be slightly taller, but there should still be room for drinks.
  • If your centerpiece makes people move their drinks to another table, you failed at size.

Popular Style Adjustments To Help You Choose

Stuck between two styles? Use these quick adjustments to find the right feel.

If it feels too plain

  • Add greenery OR texture (not both)
  • Use an odd number of books

If it feels too busy

  • Remove the top object
  • Limit colors to two max

If it feels too formal

  • Offset the stack slightly
  • Mix book sizes instead of matching them
  • Add in a colour

If it feels too casual

  • Align stacks perfectly
  • Stick to neutral covers

Same books, different rules = totally different vibe.

Rent VS Buy VS Borrow Books: How Each Option Impacts Your Design

Knowing where you’ll get your books from can help you narrow down your style.

Rent books when:

  • You need matching heights/ colors
  • You need lots of books
  • You want zero leftover books after your event
  • You need for events such as weddings, styled shoots or big formal events
  • You are sure the books aren’t going to be damaged after the event’s over

Buy thrifted books when:

  • Your style is textured/vintage/chunky
  • You don’t mind mixing spine colors
  • You’re trying to keep costs low
  • Ideal for: farmhouse, boho, rustic themed events

Borrow books from friends/sale duplicates when:

  • You want a personal touch
  • You only need books for one or two tables
  • Your style is eclectic, or real books work for your theme.
  • Ideal for: home festivities, casual (Bonus: You don’t have to return them.)

Renting, buying, and borrowing books all come with style limits and perks. Choose books that work with your source.

Common Book Centerpiece Mistakes That Affect the Final Look

These aren’t “whoops lol” moments. More of a “Oh. That look’s SO bad” moment.

Picking style over physics: Flimsy book stacks are wobbly. If they topple, your hard work is pretty much ruined. Keep the base wide, not tall.

Not considering table color: Believe me, contrast is your bestie here. Dark books on dark tables don’t really stand out, whereas light on light wash each other out.

Adding too many items on top: Cluttered-but-not-in-a-good-way looks give me the ick. So, instead of putting too much stuff on top, stick to minimal accents for an elegant look.

Leaving dust jackets on: Dull jackets wrinkle, shine awkwardly, and slide off. Take the jacket off, and style with the matte finished book.

Thinking it’s just for looks: Centerpieces have to share the table with plates, drinks, bread baskets… Don’t crowd the table. Remember, it has to be charismatic AND pragmatic.

So, there you go! A guide for book centerpieces that stand out, are beautiful, practical, and easier to make than you would think. Happy decorating! : )
